The ocean is the largest carbon dioxide exchange reservoir on Earth, playing an irreplaceable role in the global carbon cycle. A significant amount of carbon dioxide is ultimately sequestered in the ocean, helping to neutralize and offset human emissions. At the same time, theocean harbors vast and renewable non-carbon green energy sources, such as wave energy and hydrogen energy. Therefore, discussing ocean carbon neutrality and global sustainable development is of profound significance, reflecting the practical embodiment of caring for the ocean, understanding the ocean, and strategically utilizing the ocean.
Ocean University of China aims to serve the national carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals, leveraging the advantages of interdisciplinary integration across arts, science, engineering, and agriculture in the marine sciences. It provides a Chinese solution for blue carbon with the goal of deeply studying the ocean, serving the country, and achieving world-class excellence. This international seminar is expected to serve as a platform for scientists in relevant fields to exchange ideas and discuss four key research areas: blue carbon and climate change, blue governance and healthy oceans in the context of carbon neutrality, marine sustainable development, and blue carbon finance. Based on theoretical innovation, we aim to address conceptual barriers, overcome technological bottlenecks, and establish a comprehensive technology dissemination system to meet national needs.
